In March 2008 Greenbank came entirely under the Logan Shire Council framework. It is steeped in history and covers an area of approx. 49 sq kms. It was settled in the 1840’s and derived its name from a cattle property belonging to William Slack. The early industries included dairying, farming and timber cutting. Cobb and Co had a changing station at the hotel that was situated on the corner of Teviot Rd and Pub Lane, now the home of a major shopping centre.
A strip of parkland and a watercourse originally named the Platypus Pools and Bracken Way is a natural habitat for many species of flora and fauna including platypus, the rare black cockatoo, kookaburra, the blue wren, kingfisher, honeyeaters, owls, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, possums, bearded dragons, and water monitors. The water course and natural forest are fed by torrential rains and natural springs dotted throughout the Spring Mountain area.
Over the last few years there has been extensive population growth within the area, increasing from 5,098 in 1996 to 7,328 at census time in 2011, with a median age of 36 years (around the median average for Brisbane).
Sports and hobby enthusiasts are well catered for with the Greenbank Sports and Recreation Club that also incorporates the Greenbank Raiders Rugby League team. There is an extensive clubhouse and this currently undergoing extensive renovation and expansion. It is also the home of the Greenbank Football Club which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016.
Over the last few years there has been considerable expansion in the Greenbank area with major acreage residential subdivisions in Spring Mountain and the now New Beith area. It is well serviced with the addition of the Pub Lane Shopping Centre that is now planned to be expanded. It is also well known for its proximity to the new Springfield Lakes Commercial and Retail areas and the expanding infrastructure planned such as hospitals and education facilities including University.
Further expansion is happening to date with a large development known as “Covella”, an initiative of Villaworld and the planned development by Mirvac for an additional 3,000 homesites on the eastern side of Teviot Rd. Along with the expansion of the Pub Lane Shopping Facilities, it is rumoured that there maybe construction of a Catholic School on the corner of Pub Lane and Sentinel Dr East.
Greenbank covers such a vast area there are many areas to choose from. The closer in Elizabeth Park area, Spring Mountain and the back area accessed by Ison and Thompson Rd that afford the larger acreage blocks and the true bush lifestyles for relaxed country, rural living.
Greenbank is a rapidly growing and expanding area, diverse in culture, lifestyles, demographics, professions and is generally considered to be a place to be.
